THE FAC-ARTS-ED COLLECTION consists of the accumulated records of arts practitioner Janet Pillai and that of two organisations; Arts Ed Penang, and Five Arts Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The raw archival records from the 3 sources were brought together in 2016, then artificially arranged and documented in 2017.

8 Programmes and 16 Projects have been selected from the FAC-Arts-ED archival collection for interpretation in AEAM. Interpretative articles on the AEAM website incorporate some digitalised archival material relevant to the respective articles.

The record collection represents a strain of non-formal arts education conducted over 35 years between 1978-2013 and includes a wide range of out-of-school arts programmes organised by individuals, institutions and organisations in the cities of Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The collection is seen as historically and culturally significant to the field of non-formal arts-education and arts-creation in Malaysia as it reveals the growth, development and complex evolution of a major strain of non-formal arts education in Malaysia that involved young people aged 10–18 years, working with adult artists from various disciplines. The collection reveals a particular approach covering an unusual range of visual, performing, and literary arts-education that transcended formal disciplines and cultural barriers as it adapted itself to different peoples, places and times.


1. Archival Records:
The raw archival records are stored in either physical or digitalised form, in a repository. They are  categorised and boxed according to ‘Programme Files’ and ‘Project Files’. Items in each box have been inventorised and include: letters, minutes, printed reports, manuscripts, photographs, prints, audio cassette, video, digital media etc.)

2. Archival Interpretations:
Interpretations are descriptive articles of selected case examples of non-formal arts education from the collection. The interpretations are based on archival documents and the collective memory of participants; and trace the historical background, development, methodology, outputs etc. of each case example.

3. Archival Record Inventory:
This collection displays the record inventories for 25 case examples. Record inventories of unselected Programmes and/or Projects would have to be accessed at the repository.

The Record Inventory comprises an inventory data sheet that lists and indexes all raw archival items, into categories and sub-categories. Each item within the inventory is filed by an assigned code, item title, a short description, author/source and/or date where applicable (See below).
