PROJECTS WITHIN THE PROGRAMME

1. Photography Project: mySELF, myFAMILY, myTOWN  (2005-2006)
Guided by visual artist Liew Kung Yu, the children used photography as a tool to explore and capture their personal, family, and community spaces. They collected data via interviews and other sources, producing photo assemblages that were exhibited.

Building Inventory Project (2006)
Under the guidance of facilitators from Badan Warisan Malaysia, children created a building inventory of Balik Pulau town and the Titi Teras district, conducting interviews as research and producing descriptive essays, photography, and illustrations.

Penang Heritage Trail Map “Discover Balik Pulau” (2007-2008)
“Discover Balik Pulau” is the first published heritage trail map of Balik Pulau which is designed by young residents of Balik Pulau. This map showcases the outstanding cultural assets of Balik Pulau including historical buildings, local foods, trades and agricultural landscapes, cottage industries and local products.

Research Project “Cottage Industries” (2007-2009)
Students from a Science School in Balik Pulau studied various cottage industries in Balik Pulau that were dependent on local farming and fishing produce. The documented the products, how they were made as well as challenges in technology.

myBALIKpulau Community Newspaper “Discover Balik Pulau” (2008-2010)
The myBALIKpulau Community Newspaper “Discover Balik Pulau” is a publication of an illustrated newspaper on tourism and heritage of Balik Pulau in three languages, English, Malay and Chinese. This community newspaper highlights the history and the various cultural heritage and assets, as well as the importance of tourism in Balik Pulau, are illustrated with photographs and illustrations by young people.

Program Pendidikan Seni & Warisan “Treasure Hunt” (2008)
Students participated the heritage trail “Treasure Hunt” to discover the archivecture, trades and plantations found in Balik Pulau. They had also did research on the cultural heritage assets and signages were created to promote their heritage.

Bengkel Lukisan dan Penghasilan Komik Animasi (5th-9th & 14th-19th Nov 2001)
Arts-ED organised a creative arts workshop, Bengkel Lukisan dan Penghasilan Komik Animasi, at the Public Library of Balik Pulau with the objective to raise arts education of the younger generation and to stimulate their creativity through their participation.

Balik Pulau Interpretation Signage (2009)
Visual artists Yeoh Lian Heng and Aishah Baharuddin worked with children to help them produce interpretative signages for selected Balik Pulau sites or personalities, incorporating interviews, sketching, and exploration of visual art forms.
